How to Stop Automatic Payments From Your Bank Account Without Missing a Bill

To stop automatic payments from a bank account, first cancel or revoke the payment authorization with the company in writing, then notify your bank or credit union that you want to stop the preauthorized transfer. Regulation E says a consumer may stop payment of a preauthorized electronic fund transfer by notifying the financial institution orally or in writing at least three business days before the scheduled transfer. Keep proof, monitor the next statement, and pay any valid bill another documented way so stopping the pull does not become a missed-payment problem.
