Closed the Bank Account but the Bill Still Tried to Pull? What Happens Next
If an autopay tries to pull from a bank account after you closed it, the payment usually does not just disappear. The debit may be returned unpaid, the biller may mark your account past due, and either the biller or the old bank may apply fees depending on their actual terms. Your safest move is to check both sides: confirm the old bank account is truly closed and whether any debit was paid, returned, or forwarded; then update or revoke the biller authorization in writing and pay any legitimate balance another way. Do not assume account closure cancels the merchant relationship or prevents retries.
